Got a question. I inherited this tractor from my Dad, it is a 1969 International Hydro. When I shift it with the forward reverse stick I hit the "neutral" slot it will freewheel. I thought it is suppose to stop when I get to "neutral". Can someone clear this up for me??
Thanks for the help.

Mine stops, not like a lawn mower,(slid the tires and spin them on take off)but it stops with no roll on.

I am/was assuming it would stop with no movement unless you moved the lever forward or reverse. I would assuming holding solid on hills also. Just cannot remember how it should function.
Also wondering what can be wrong if it is for sude not working correctly. Maybe someone who knows exactly how it works will join in. Since the brakes generally are not great I would expect it to be a safety hazard if it would freewheel when you pull it back to the center position.

Hoping someone else who has or knows about these Hydro's will chime in about how it is suppose to work when working properly???

An IH mechanic can tell you better, but on my gas 656 hydro the tractor freewheels when the lever is in the center of the horizontal slot. When the lever is pushed to either side the transmission locks up.

Thanks for the input..I think you may be right. Will see if there is any more input. Some of these guys in here know these hydros very very well.

Unfortunately, there are only a few people in the world that really know how these things work, and none of them belong to this site.

You might do well to call Herrs Machine. They are highly regarded in the IH community for their expertise on rebuilding hydrostatic transmissions. herrshydro.com

f it is in the center of the neutral slot it will freewheel, If it is pushed to the side the trans will hold it if it is adjusted right. Do your self a favor and look on ebay for a 544/656 hydrostatic troubleshooting guide, it will be the best money you ever spent. I have a 2544, 656,hydro 86,hydro 100 & 1026. I like my Hydros Eason

When you move the lever toward the neutral slot the shuttle spool shifts so pressure builds in the reverse drive side to provide engine braking. The deceleration pressure will lock the drive spool in the forward position until pressure drops enough to release the drive spool allowing it to shift to neutral.

If you pull the lever to quickly to the neutral slot the deceleration pressure doesn't have enough time (about 1 second) to hold the drive spool in position.

Do not allow the tractor to coast in neutral even with the engine running.
