I have a 1956 Farmall 400. My tach has not worked in 25 years or longer. I put in a new tach, cable, the cable connector and drive gear and the tach works now. My question that I have not been able to find an answer for in any manual is: Is there oil in the housing where the cable gear meshes with the gear that is in the housing that comes off the hydraulic pump?
When I bought the tractor there was no tach or cable. The cable connector was open and what was inside the housing was grease. There is a small plug on the side of the housing that I assume is to fill the housing with oil or does the housing get its oil from the hydraulic pump or is there suppose to be grease in it?
A friend has 400 with the same issues with the tach not working.
He left the cable off waiting on a new one and there was hydraulic fluid all over the floor coming out of the opening where the cable connector goes in the housing. Either his tractor has a seal leaking hydraulic fluid into the housing or my housing has the oil passage blocked if it is suppose to get oil that way. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you,
Tim
