Farmall 400 Tachometer Drive Housing Oil

I have a 1956 Farmall 400. My tach has not worked in 25 years or longer. I put in a new tach, cable, the cable connector and drive gear and the tach works now. My question that I have not been able to find an answer for in any manual is: Is there oil in the housing where the cable gear meshes with the gear that is in the housing that comes off the hydraulic pump?

When I bought the tractor there was no tach or cable. The cable connector was open and what was inside the housing was grease. There is a small plug on the side of the housing that I assume is to fill the housing with oil or does the housing get its oil from the hydraulic pump or is there suppose to be grease in it?

A friend has 400 with the same issues with the tach not working.
He left the cable off waiting on a new one and there was hydraulic fluid all over the floor coming out of the opening where the cable connector goes in the housing. Either his tractor has a seal leaking hydraulic fluid into the housing or my housing has the oil passage blocked if it is suppose to get oil that way. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you,

Tim

If there is hydraulic oil there the hydraulic pump seal is going out. We would grease with one pump once or twice a year by putting a fitting in the hole and then replacing after done. Depends how much you
use it, the operator's manual had that info and it has been a long time since I had that series of tractor.

Dad and I replaced the distributor drive housing on my Super H with a used one off a 300/350 in May 1969,
installed new tach and drive cable. Replaced cable about 1976 or '77. Have never greased the gearbox
since it was installed 48 years ago. I think we put a bit of gun grease on the gear teeth when we
installed it. The live hyd pump seals could be leaking some but the tach runs just fine. The gear that
attaches to the cable is plastic or nylon. Doesn't need much lubrication.

FYI.
The seal #352080R91 or the replacement seal #358831R91 are not the correct part # for the seal in the housing from the hyd. pump. The parts books and the parts lookup on the Case IH web site shows these two numbers but these are at least twice the size that it actually takes.

The number we found that is correct is 124633R91. This crosses to a National number 450680. Case IH parts store list this seal an "OTHER SEAL".

Descripition:
Inside Diameter: 22.23 mm,0.875 in
Outside Diameter: 38.18 mm,1.503 in
Width: 6.35 mm,0.25 in

I hope this information will help others that need to find this seal.
