M - Engine Removal

Is it possible to remove the engine without splitting the frame? The tractor is out in the yard so I really don't want to have to deal with half a tractor. I have the steering, head, radiator and water pump removed so can I disconnect it at the clutch housing and remove the engine out the top while leaving the front bolster and frame rails connected? Does the clutch or flywheel have to come off to do it that way?

Support the back end and have a lift on the motor. The plate at bak end of the motor is bolted to the motor behind the fly wheel. Separate far enough to get the motor out and then slide the front part with rails back and put the bolts back in to make it a roller.

No, the frame rail bolts go through the backing plate on the engine. The backing plate is bolted to the engine, so the frame rails have to come off. You can take the frame rails and front bolster off at one time by removing the 4 frame rail bolts at the back of the engine and the 2 engine mount bolts on each side out. The entire front section will come off, front wheels, bolster and frame rails. Once the engine is out of the way, reconnect the frame rails, and you can move the tractor around.

This is what I am working with so the tractor doesn't move anywhere at the moment. I am trying to figure out how to get an engine hoist to move in the grass and get it mounted on a stand...

I'd build a wooden "horse" or inverted U frame from something like double 2x10s over the top, some 2x6 to 2x8 columns, bottom feet, and as much side bracing and triangulation as you can stand. Deck screws, GRK-RSS torx drive construction screws, etc.

Then you can use something like a chainfall or a lever hoist, and simply slide the "horse" back and forth in the grass. Will be ideal for breaking down any part of the tractor.

You would need to unbolt the flywheel and move it back far enough to remove the bolts the hold the back plate to the block. It may be possible but I have not heard of anyone who tried it.

I think if I block up the rear behind the clutch and remove the lower bolster then the upper then the frames none of it should be too heavy to get out of the way.

You have to block it up under the bellhousing but not with cinder blocks! If you try to do it by yourself by removing the lower bolster then the upper make sure you have help it's very heavy. And if you can't get someone strong enough to help then at least get someone to be prepared to dial 911.

I should have seen this a couple hours ago! I figured just moving the lower then the upper would divide the weight. Nope that upper is no joke and I couldn't figure out how to hold the bolts for the lower until it was upside down. Probably took a few years off me dragging those bolsters across the yard.
