Shift know replacement

The shift lever on my 1953 SH has lost its shift knob. It never had one when I bought it in 1987 and I wasn't concerned since I used it for farm work. I just got it back from some engine and body work and I want to put a factory shift knob on. Anybody been through this? Do I need to retread the end of the shift lever? Thanks.

My 1950 "H" has a black plastic knob, and I have never been able to turn it or twist it. Will not move. Don't know if it's threaded, jammed on, pounded in, heat-melted on, or what.

They are rubber knobs that kinda grip the shaft. I use super glue to keep it from coming off. on this site they are 5/25. Jim

Now if you want that new knob to stay on and lock to the shifter then wet the inside down with gas and stuff it on . after a couple days it will be there till the end of time .

I put one of the rubber ones on my SMTA, my 560 and the overdrive lever on my jeep. Just pushed on and none have had any desire to come off.

When I put a rubber one on my H I soaked it in some hot water. When it was good and soft I shoved it on. After it cooled off and shrunk a little bit it never moved again.

That also works well when installing the rubber boot on the shifter. Put a little liquid dish soap on the lever first.
