H Starting problem

I have a '41 Farmall H and his i finshed the restoration i have been having an issue starting. If the tractor sits for 3 or 4 hours it starts fine; however when i start it then run it 20-30 mins and shut it off it won't re start. It has a fresh rebuilt magneto, new everything electric. I am confused and any ideas would be great.

If the fuel is shut off when you stop it, the carb can't flood. If the engine turns slow, the mag should start it anyway, especially if the Impulse coupling is tripping, it should start. A weak mag magnet can make less spark when hot. Jim

i usually shut it off then turn it back on before i get going. the carb doesn't appear to flood (no gas runs out of it)when i turn it back on. and when i pull start it, its usually running in 5 feet or less.

It doesn't seem to be, but maybe. I just don't understand why it starts up just fine when cold, then when it's warm and i shut it off it won't restart unless it's sat for a few hours. But you pull it and it starts right up in about 5 feet of pulling.

Valve clearance decreases as the engine becomes hotter. If the gap is too small, the valves cannot completely close, and then you have a serious compression loss.

If the carb is heating the fuel enough to reduce the level with the fuel shut off, turn the fuel on earlier and then give it a try. These really need 0 gauge battery cables. Which could help. Jim

I will second the valve clearances. My H was getting almost impossible to start when I heard about checking the valves. After setting them, it fires on the first or second revolution.
