Generator not charging

Not IH BUT -I have a older Hobart welder with a 6cyl Chrysler motor. I decided to sw to 12V
and installed a resistor for the coil I though I would see if the 6V gen would charge it as
I don't use the welder very often. With the motor running it shows a 20A discharge(Amp
meter is wired correctly)If I grd the F it charges but things get hot and it puts load on
the motor. What would make it discharge.
Thanks

Was it a positive ground system before you put the alternator on it? Alternators are a negative ground system.

I tried to back out of my reply, when I realized that you were still using the generator. It posted anyway.

At first impression I wonder about things such as was the Generator correctly polarized to match what you ended up with (maybe it stayed the same so there wasn't any polarization issue, I cant say from here) ???

I wonder about if its a Class A or a Class B charging system.

I wonder if its a Voltage Regulator system if you changed over to a 12 volt Voltage Regulator suitable for the polarity and A or B system you have

I have successfully used old 6 volt gennys to charge at 12 volts by changing to a 12 volt Voltage Regulator but its not for the inexperienced nor did it charge at any high rate

Sounds like you may be overloading the genny so it heats up trying to charge that 12 volt battery???

Need more info but that's nuff said for now but really question the VR and if its still 6 or 12 volt and about polarity of genny and VR specs ????????

Its neg ground and I did polarize the generator. I just left the 6 volt generator and VR as it was. It looks like the same as a M with a VR. The VR has A F & B terminals.I just did not know why it was discharging so much maybe something in the VR. I will go ahead and install the alternator. Its one of those old 500 amp welders and it turns over kind of slow on 6 volts. Just something to play around with.
Thanks

Id say theres a chance the old 6 volt VR went south. I changed to a 12 volt VR when I did what youre trying

Best wishes n good luck
