400 with fast hitch check valve ??

If only your 61 year old tractor could talk.... my 56' 400 with fast hitch does not have the check valve set up I am seeing on other tractors from internet pics. Help me confirm what I think I am seeing , the hard lines coming along the deck and thru the battery box have the check valve mounted to it. So the hard lines I have with no side ports for o-ring connection to the check valve can't be used or just what is the program here???? Can the two plugs on the side of the block be removed to connect a check valve? How vital is the check valve?? My estimation is it would be vital if I want to do any real lifting with my fast hitch as either a 2 point or in a 3 point set up. Opinions and advice please and thank you!

Two plugs are removed and longer bolts used through block that mount lines to battery box. O rings go between blocks. Check keeps fluid from bypassing the control valve and letting hitch drift down. If the hydraulic cylinder on hitch is in good condition it will hold a implement raised for a long time.
