Help on a Farmall Cub

I have put new rings on the pistons on my cub. I have honed the cylinders also. My questions are what should I use when installing the pistons? Oil? Or a special lubricant? My next question is how do I prime the oil pump? When I prime the oil pump will it send oil to the pistons as soon as I start the engine? Thanks.

Dip the pistons Just before insertion into a coffee can of engine oil that will be used in it. To assure oil pressure, it is very important to prime the pump and oil gallery. There is a small pipe plug near the oil filter that can be used to prime it. Use a pump type oil can and a fitting to attach it to the gallery. It may take several oil cans to completely fill the system. When full, a noticeable increase in pump effort. Jim

Every engine I have rebuilt I use STP oil treatment to coat all parts with including my hands before I so much as touched a part. Learned that way back when as for coating my hand when I found a finger print on a rod bearing from where a person had picked up a rod bearing with bear hands and the acid in your fingers can leave a finger print behind which is not good for the bearing

I just use gloves when handling sensitive parts and put engine assembly lube on the bearing surface. On the pistons I just coat them in the same engine oil that will go into the pan.

Yes I did, everything turned out to be in spec. Yes it was just a ring job. I might end up doing a valve job while I have it apart.

Cool! Seen a few times on here where someone just slaps a set of rings in a tractor and doesnt check and it smokes worse than it did before.

If you pour the oil in the filter housing that will drain to the oil pump and it would then be primed. I have never had a problem with the oil pump working after refreshing the engine.
