Flushing hydraulic system what to use

Hi There,

I'm a new member and just got my first tractor, it's an International 340 Utility. I changed the hydraulic fluid and it was a beige slime, changed filters. This last winter the system froze up in the cold weather, I was wondering if there is something I can put in the reservoir live isopropanol alcohol or diesel. I was also contemplating putting an external spin-on hydraulic filter as well, can someone please help.

Thanks for the help IHTimmy, should I cycle the hydraulics as well to flush out some of the crap or is that a bad idea putting the diesel under pressure.

NO! Don't put diesel or anything else in to "flush" the system.

You will ruin the hydraulic pump.

Just change the oil you can. Drain and refill. Don't do anything else.

Any "contaminated" oil will mix in with the fresh oil. It might not look pristine, but it will be fine. The oil doesn't stay pristine anyway.

BarnyardEngineering is absolutely correct, do not put gallons of diesel into your system to flush it, you will have a lot more problems than just milky hyd fluid......

Thank you, everyone, for the help, I will just change and leave it be. What do you think about adding a spin on filter in the hydraulic system to help get some of the moisture out?

Do what you want to do but do one thing just keep it out of the weather put it in a building and all that any rain you're going to get is going to come to the bolt holes in the deck plate and all that I worked on for 45 years and never had a problem
