656 TA metallic click noise

There is a rapid metallic clicking noise or rattle when the TA is in Direct. Seems to be coming from the TA housing. Similar to loose tappets or an exhaust leak, but it is not engine noise. It resonates from the operator platform slightly more when you are sitting in the seat and you can almost feel it in your feet. As soon as you pull the lever back, the noise is gone along with the mechanical sensation. Most noticeable in neutral. I find it odd that there is an issue in direct vs. TA because there are less moving parts in direct. Any ideas? Adjustments and lever action seem fine. I hope it's a wayward cotter pin :)
Thanks for your help

656 Farmall torque amplifier noise

From what you are saying, it would be my guess that one of the two ball bearings that holds the TA carrier had the ball holder (cage) break and now the balls are making the clicking sound. When you are driving in DD the carrier assembly is turning. When you have the tractor in TA the carier is standing still and the power is flowing throught the TA by flowing in the input sun shaft to the plant gears out the ouput sun gear to the transmission. The picture is of a cut-a-way mechanical TA that I have made for tractor shows. I need to figure out how to draw two arrows on this picture to show you where these two bearing are. Let me know if you need more help.

could it also be possible for the TA throwout bearing to be wobbling on its pilot and forks from just touching the fingers? (just throwing out ideas) Jim

My 350 did that when the pin fell out of one of the TA pressure plate levers. Does your 656 has a small inspection cover over the TA clutch ? If so, take it off, tie down the clutch pedal and turn the TA clutch. You will see if it is missing parts or is not lifting evenly.

By any chance, did you replace the TA clutch in the past few years ?

My 656 does exactly the same thing, it started when a new clutch was installed. TA seems to work fine but it makes noise when in neutral w/ lever ahead. Clicking rattling sound. Any help would be appreciated.

thank you for all your advice, i'll look into it as much as I can. Yes it is identical to the 300 in design. THe cutaway is useful, too. 500 hours ago center housing was out to replace pto bearing and clutch was replaced 1000 hours ago.

thank you

Update:
I found 2 minutes to spare and it seems the vibrations are transferred to the actuation arm which leads me to believe it is throw out related. Also the arm wiggles when it begins to touch the throw out if using my hand to move the actuating arm on side of t a housing.

Thanks for input everyone

finally made time to open the access cover. having an almost 2 year old sure changes your priorities--almost 2 years of no farm time. the TA throw-out bearing tips when in direct drive and bounces against the clutch fingers. slight contact with the clutch fingers is still noisy and bouncy but full engagement is silent. all fingers appear to be equally extended by the eyeball method. there are 2 springs listed in the parts list between the throw out trunnion and engagement arm that i did not see when the cover was off, but i did not know to look for them at the time--maybe they are gone. Hopefully i can cure the noise without a split!
