IH 484 engine

Friend of mine just bought a nice 484 with Front end loader and the 3 cylinder 2.9 Liter diesel engine. Any known problem areas with these tractors?

How many hours on the engine? That's one of the most overengineered and bulletproof engines you're likely to run across, if a bit cold-blooded, and potentially good for close to 10,000 hours until a rebuild if not abused. The transmission is mostly bulletproof. The hydraulics can get finicky if not well maintained (like if the filter and fluid haven't been changed for a long time, or if there are bits of the parking brake in the fluid). Check the steering cylinder hoses as if they're original they are apt to blow at any time (but most likely at a really inconvenient time, like screaming down the road in 8th gear). Note that most of the parts of that tractor were designed to handle a heftier engine and the D-179's only 50HP will be pretty gentle to the transmission and rear end. The machine is very likely to have been driven by some bozo with the parking brake engaged, and if so your friend will have to decide whether opening up the transmission to replace the brake band is worth the effort.

ivor from UK here and I used to work at main IH dealer 40 years ago and I remember the 84 series at the Smithfield show in London in 1977 the tractor range was good but the 484 was geared too high I remember 484 buyers were not happy because there was no guts at all in the tractor compared to the 454 which was exchanged I remember the chief fitter at the firm adjusting the pump which improved things but made the warranty void so check the pump
I remember one 484 in particular and it was the only one to be done was taken in the workshop and the gearbox ratio was changed and this was done after the warranty was finished but the farmer was never charged and it pulled better afterwards
the IH guy would never admit there was a problem
i don't know if export 484's had same transmission
As previously said check handbrake and check for coolant in oil

Thanks for the replies. I am anxious to see it when he gets it home. Looks a lot like my 364 only a little bigger.

Be nothing like you 364, sort of a deluxe utility.

Engine starts good in the cold, I've done -5C unassisted on same engine but block heater normally used. Might have factory either assist as well.
