Removal of steering wheel

I have removed the nut from steering wheel on IHC 68 444, do they make a steering wheel puller or do you just have to beat it off? It is rusted bad.

Don't beat it, you'll mushroom the end of the shaft. Start soaking it with a good penetrating oil, I like KROIL, while you round up a good puller, then use the puller. Heat may be needed too.

Beating it is also a good way to break the steering column, so don't do it.

Kroil is a waste of time unless you have months to let it soak in. The splines are very small, a very tight fit, and almost two inches deep. If you want the steering wheel off NOW, you need to heat the center hub with something more potent than a plumber's torch.

If this is a plastic coated steering wheel there should be a threaded hole on each side of the center hub. Get yourself a steering wheel puller to use once you've heated the hub.

I found it takes some patience, and a few days. A puller, some PB Blaster, some more heat, then leave the puller on overnight,. More heat, more PB, and more pull, leave the puller on, crank it, heat, more PB, and repeat and repeat til the thing pops loose. I think the puller has to pull for some days before it gets the job done.

I can't use a torch because the gas tank is too close and is full of fuel. I will soak it and get a puller. Thanks for the information.

Sure you can. You're heating a small area, not cutting and throwing sparks, and the tank isn't THAT close. Do it outside while a breeze is blowing and you have ZERO chance of problems.

It's actually better with a full tank than an empty tank because there's less room for vapor. It's the near empty tanks that explode. You can drop a lit match into a full fuel tank and nothing will happen because there's no vapor and no oxygen.

I use an air hammer after soaking with nail polish remover, I never had one take more than a few minutes.
