Farmall M labeled as a Farmall 400

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum. I need some help on identifying a future project I am looking at. My grandfather had an M or at least what I am perceiving as an M however it displays a 400 emblem on the side of the hood. It is definatley M style of sheet metal on the hood and grill. Why would it have a 400 emblem on the side? My grandfather has been long gone and my dad has always identified it as an M. Has anyone seen this before? The paint is still original and I can not see any evidence of the "M" on the side. The Mc Cormick Farmall lettering is the same as an M. I am really confused.

There are very many differences. If there is an aluminum ID plate on the left side of the bell housing, it will have (probably) the correct serial number. The M will also have sheetmetal covers over drum brakes. It will also have a transmission driven PTO. There will be no lever or attached linkage for a Torque amplifier. It will not have a fast hitch or live hydraulics (unless someone added them, and not all 400s had a fast hitch). Someone probably had 400 emblem and stuck it on. Tractors repainted 40 years ago can weather to look 60 years old. It could have a 400 engine in it. What are the raised cast in letters near the oil filter. Jim

As you most likely know but I will add, if you can see any portion of the steering shaft turn beyond the steering wheel it is NOT a 400. Nothing against you grandfather, but many people are very proud of their possessions, some so much so that they try to convince others something is something that it is not. No offense, just my two cents. I just came from spending most of the day at one of the largest street rod events in the nation held in St. Paul, MN. I witnessed many such examples today.

Jim, Thank You! I will take a look at these things to identify the tractor. I will let you know what I find out.

Here are some photos of an M and a 400. The top two are of an M and looking down over controls and hood. The second two photos are of a 400.

To the untrained eye, the tractors can look very similar, but if you look at the pictures posted above of the two tractors you should be able to identify some key differences that will help.

Of course the 400 emblems could be someone's idea of a joke. People have done all sorts of crazy things to these tractors over the years.

i took a look at it. The serial number indicates a 1948 year Model M. It looks as if some major customization had been done to add power stearing to the wide front end. The front axles are definatley not original, and the hydraulic system is different from what I see Farmall offering on the M. I think my grandfather purchased the tractor this way, as he did not modify it.
