I think I have figured out that you know something about IPTOs in SMTAs, 400s, and others. My SMTA apparently needs a band replacement. What all is involved in removing the rear IPTO unit and replacing the main band (at least)? Should the thing be totally torn down or can the band or bands be removed/replaced only? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There is no easy way to access the bands. The job is not difficult in that it is removable without much difficulty. Drain down the differential to prevent it from pouring out the mounting hole. Remove the linkage on the right side. Remove the mounting bolts (one is long and on top rear edge (IIRC). The best advice is to have a repair manual, take pictures every few minutes, purchase new seals and either have the band relined, or new if available. Clean really well.
