504 diesel oil filter fun

New to me 504 diesel. decided to change the oil and filter. can't get the gasket to seal. I don't like how the mating surface is groved on the outboard and smooth on inboard. and the gasket is flat. so it wants to squish out. is it possible I got the wrong gasket

Did you dig out all old gaskets. They get so hard they are often
mistaken as being part of base.

hanks. Due to old eyes and dim lighting And maybe some WTF was I thinking. I didn't realize that the old gasket was still in there.

then to make matters worse. Because the shutoff valve drips i had the valve off then ran it out of fuel. then while cranking it to get air out of the back cylinder the starter solenoid connection got hot and opened up. at least it rained on the hay i cut yesterday.
