I'm working on a mid mount mower on a farmall cub. Got it hooked up and the belt on but now it is very difficult to engage the pto. If I open the oil filler I can push the pto into gear with a screwdriver
but it won't go with just the lever... The pto engaged normally before the belt and mower were attached. Any ideas for a fix? I'm guessing worn parts but it looks like a little bit of a job to take the
whole thing apart.

If the belt tension changes the ease of moving the lever, the wear will probably also cause jumping out of gear (eventually) and wear on the shift linkage. Jim

It depends of whether the shafts or gears are beyond using. Bearings and bushings can be found (even if from a place like Kaman Bearing or Motion Industries. Gears/shafts and coupler (on off) parts are more costly and difficult to find. But certainly not impossible. Jim

got same problem. ahem, the pto pilot bushing may be worn out. it is a thin bushing that goes into the main shaft coming from clutch, etc., remove the plates from the rear, with the pto shaft and replace the bushing. recommendation made to me was to pack the clutch shaft tube with grease, place a long rod, that fits the inside of the tube and hit the rod with a hammer. it is said that hydraulic pressure will bring out the bushing.

another possibility, with tranny fill plug removed and looking down onto the pto shaft and clutch shaft; there should be little gap between the splines. if there is a 1/2 inch gap or so, tractor will need to be split and turn the bushing/bearing retainer, in front of the transmission over and replace. this will close the gap. i have a transmission, from another cub and that one is installed incorrectly.

good luck
