Re the recent 884-TA discussion on the Farmall/IH forum, I have come to the conclusion (in my mind, at least) that a default sprag must exist in the cage or housing just in front of the TA itself, and that the sprag clutch in the TA unit, when disengaged, simply renders that sprag ineffective. Anyone know exactly what is in that cage that functions as a permanent sprag? And, what must be done or removed to eliminate it?

Just a question, did you try to turn the engine backwards. If you have another tractor with a TA, mechanical or hydraulic, you could see that you can turn engine backwards. On the mechanical TA you have to pull the TA lever to release direct drive. Also, do you have the parts you removed to see if the sprag is in there or not. I am just curious as I have never been inside one of them . Don't plan on it either but curious minds you know.

Hey, Pete. Yes the engine will turn backward. Sorry for the triple photos. The item on the right is the sprag clutch. It fits into the top of the larger, main TA on the left. Thanks for your interest.

Hi Cool Hand, as far as I know, you have the photo of the only sprag clutch in the 884 drive train. I don't want to question your mechanical ability but are you sure the clutch is installed the correct way with the spring holder away from the flywheel? Do you have the proper adjustment on the clutch pedal? Did you take the locks out of the pressure plate springs?
I still believe the clutch is dragging. Did you try the roll back test with the range trans in neutral?

JimB

Pete, I have to correct what I said earlier. I just tried turning the engine backward a little further than before and I found that it would only turn about 1/8 turn, so I was wrong. This does help to confirm that the sprag is still in there.

Hey, JimB, thanks for your interest and input. I know that the clutch is installed correctly. The clutch operates just as it should. The rollback test will allow the rollback to occur normally if either transmission is in neutral. As far as drag of clutch is concerned, there is no drag evident as long as motion of the tractor is spinning the transmission input shaft in its normal direction with or without the engine running. The brakes allow free wheeling either direction when one of the transmissions is in neutral. All adjustments were made as prescribed in the service manual. I did find that I misled Pete when I said that the engine could be turned backward--I checked it more closely a little while ago and could only turn it backward no more than 1/8 turn.

Thanks for the reply and if you ever figure out what is happening, it would be interesting to know. By the way. Just got done working on the wife's sewing machine. That thing should be painted yellow. It was doing some strange things and found that somehow, the mechanism that is pushed into place for embroidery work had worked over and caused all kinds of weird things. I had to learn how to run that darn thing when she got it about ten years ago. Problem is I have forgotten all I learned about it now. Has a computer of course also and I don't need anymore things to relearn. Just had to throw that out there .
