W series starting issues

Hello all, new here. So I am in need of advice.

I have a w-4 that won't start off the starter (won't even turn) brand new battery so that isn't issue. I am suspect of kill button as it seems sloppy while pulling out and amperes gauge does not move. However gauge works when you turn on lights.

2nd issue. I have a w6 that turns over and runs smooth when going but doesn't wish to start with consistency. I am thinking, perhaps slight timing issue or maybe a spark issue? Open to suggestions.

Both will go with a tug (bum start) but that is not a long term solution obviously.

Looking forward to any advice. I am mechanically inclined, but troubleshooting I need help on.

Use a test light on the wire going to the side of the distributor. When cranking this light should blink off and on. if it never comes on, the switch, or wire is bad.
If the wire is disconnected at the distributor, and the switch is turned on, the coil should have power on both the small terminals. (not cranking) if no power (light)
the switch or wire is bad. If it never blinks on this test, the points may be corroded or "open". Clean them with fine abrasive paper and clean them with a folded
dollar bill (no lint). Set them to .020" when they are on the bump of the 4 lobe cam that open them. Jim

kill button has nothing to do with cranking. probably the push button starter switch, cables or starter at fault.
on the w6 just do the regular tune up with valve adjustment and compression check.plugs may just need a cleaning and gapping but nobody does that, same with points might only need to set them to spec. carb is adjusted after timing is set. like what can a person say... who knows when it had a tune up??.

I will give those a go. Need to get at them. On th w4 it had starter button replaced not less than 3 years ago and has seen minimal use. What's the life expectancy on one? Also, why no amperes drop when opening button?

There are only 4 components to a W-4 electric start.

Starter
Battery
Switch
Wires

Run booster cables from battery to starter, that will tell you if the starter works! TRACTOR IN NEUTRAL!!!!

Likely dirty terminals on battery or switch. If original wires, they can turn to dust inside and not carry enough current.

As 495man says, There are only 4 components to a W-4 electric start: Starter, Battery, Switch, Wires.
The ammeter shows no discharge when operating the starter, becuase it is not in the starter circuit. If it were, you would destroy it when operating the starter. You need good heavy cables (00 gauge works well), good clean contacts, including connections to ground. Check that starter body is clean where it bolts in and that the bolts are clean and tight, otherwise there will be high resistance in the circuit. Check the starter motor itself is in good order, turns over easily under no load, good brushes, clean undamaged commutator…
