Puzzled with my 884

Just finished reassembling my 884 after far too much time. I installed a new engine clutch. I removed the torque amplifier (pump and all,) and installed an eliminator coupling. Installed a new park brake. Also rebuilt the PTO clutch while I was in there. Put everything back together and everything seems to work fine EXCEPT for one thing. When driving up grade and disengaging the clutch there is a normal stop but no rolling back, none at all. Same in all ranges and speed gears. Very similar to one of the larger row-crop tractors with an out-of-adjustment TA. Any suggestions what I have done wrong. TIA!!

Thanks, Cornerpost! But, wouldn't clutch drag interfere with free shifting? This doesn't appear to be the case. And, wouldn't brake drag also prevent free-wheeling when out-of-gear?

I think you still have the sprag in there and your eliminator is same as direct drive which now cannot be released when clutched. I am not real well versed in that model though. Some one else will chime in.

That is exactly what it acts like, but is there a sprag in there that is not within the unit that I removed? It was my understanding that removal of the TA unit in the drive line and the pump that activated it totally eliminated it.

Yes, Jim, it works normally in all gears and ranges. It seems to only be a problem when a force seeks to reverse the rotation of the clutch disk itself.

Hi Cool Hand, my brother's 684 does the same thing since he had a T/A eliminator kit installed by a retired IH mechanic several years ago. First thing in the morning before transmission oil was warmed up, it was very difficult to shift into 1st gear unless you pulled the T/A into Lo but now with T/A gone you don't have that option.
You can tell if it is clutch or brake drag by doing your stop on a slope test then put the Hi/N/Lo into neutral and see if it will roll backwards. If no roll backwards then the parking brake is dragging. If it rolls backward then the clutch is dragging.

BTW the later 95 and 30 and 40 series Doncaster UK tractors with electric T/A switch on the dash instead of the mechanical lever have an extra switch on the clutch neutral switch that drops the tractor into Lo T/A when the clutch lever is pressed to make it easier to change gears. My brother also has a 3230 a newer version of 584 and that is how it works and it does make it easier to change gears.

After looking at the book, it does indeed look like the sprag would be in the ta unit you removed. A test of the speed transmission would be to see if you can turn the engine backwards. You should be able to. Also, pop the range transmission out of gear just as you are coming to a stop to see if it will roll back then. That will eleminate clutch and speed transmission as being part of problem.

Thanks, Pete. I worked the tractor and loader today storing away large round bales of hay. What a struggle it was shifting gears since my farm has no level spot that isn't in row crops. Had to "neutralize" one transmission or the other before the motion of the tractor stopped in order to change direction or gears (range or speed.) Once one was disengaged, then shifting was normal, but if I didn't neutralize one or the other upon clutching and before it settled back shifting was difficult if not impossible. I am convinced now that a sprag does exist in there somewhere. I just wish that I could learn what is necessary to disable its function.

I'm just not that familiar with that style of TA as we sold just a couple and no problems with TA. Just how much of the TA do you have laying there on your bench. The sprag is in the front part of the TA so if you have those parts there you should be able to find it in the parts you removed. Did you try turning the engine backwards. It has to be able to turn backwards. With the old mechanical TA's, when I was working on the tractor, you always had to pull the TA lever back to turn the engine backwards to release the direct drive clutch . On hydraulic direct drive TA's, they are always released when you shut the engine down due to no hydraulics. Now, with a direct connection in yours, if there is a sprag in there, it will not turn backwards. I find it difficult to visualize the TA being removed and the sprag still in there but all your symptoms sure point that direction. By putting it out of gear and it will roll back, that eliminates hand brake, wheel brakes and anything else behind transmission.
