Making an A super?

I have my grandfathers 1946 "a". It sits in the barn. I thought
if it had hydraulics like a super a it might get some more use
with belly mower and snow plow. Is it possible if I find a donor
tractor? What do I need? Pump, unit, and lines? Thanks,
Josh

Hydraulics would definitely make the tractor more useful, but to convert it to a Super A would require a new engine block, torque tube, all the lines, a touch control unit, a pump and probably numerous small parts & pieces.

My advice: If you want a Super A, just buy a Super A.

Many years ago I added hyds to my B. I simply used a power steering pump for the hyds. It worked just fine for what I was using it for which was to lift a sickle bar mower I have built form junk parts to fit the B

i agree with old, add a ps pump, or like i did on my farmall b, a pto driven hydraulic pump. i have a prince 22gpm 2500 psi pump on it. can run the belly mower, snowplow and log splitter off the hydraulics. another option is to keep your eyes open for a char-lynn power pack. its a self contained pump, resevoir and control valve all in one unit. kinda looks like a 5 gallon bucket. it mounts on your pto.

Am I far off in saying that 22 gpm at 2500 psi would require some 25 hp? If that is correct you must have a very powerful B.

It all depends on if you push the hyds hard. If you know the limits that will work just fine but yes if you push things you may stall the engine but you would have to hold on the control for awhile to stall it

with belly mower, if land that you are mowing over, is relatively smooth, there is little raising or lowering the mower, except when you start and end. the springs, etc., can be adjusted so that a minimum of effort is needed to raise and lower the mower.

when i rebuilt it, i put in bigger pistons, it is a snotty rascal. rear tires have fluid, it pulls a 2-14 lil genius for the garden . it is a wheelie poppin stinker if you are not careful with the clutch.

If you want it to have hydraulic just like the super A you will need a donor block from a super A or from a C with block made for hydraulic.

The last 125 Bs had C blocks and you could put a live hydraulic on it. A B is handy with live hydraulic.

Talking about pulling 2-14's with a farmall A.I they its about 2" deep .Around here its all a M will do to pull them.

Putting a hydraulic pump on the engine, where the Generator is works well. I would use a medium duty truck Power Steering unot on it. Find one with double pulley and remote reservoir. Drive the generator from the second pulley. Make brackets and stack them vertically. Jim

I've used an A for many years that I got as an equipment trade. The previous guy added "live hydraulics" by putting a double pulley on the generator. Then he bolted a pto grain truck pump to the tractor frame. It's nice because it has the pump, reservoir, and valve block all as one unit. He had a control rod to run it much like the starter rod. I took it off since I wasn't using the front blade and only rarely using the mower. It has sat on the shelf for a while but now I have a grain truck with a leaking lift. I'm going to put the good unit off the little farmall on there.

Old will a power steering pump have enough pressure to use on a loader and will it hold up to the constant use?

Depending on the power steering pump they can put out 1500PSI and since they are used from the moment a car or truck is started they do just fine but one big problem is the small tank on them for fluid
