My 460U has been sitting in the garage with no steering for 2 years. Never found the time to work on it. It sat for a couple years outside before I decided to bring it in one fall. It has had a loader on it most of its life. So the steering has likely taken a beating. We ae moving off the acreage and I need it sellable. No one will buy it with the steering out.
The last few times I drove it the steering wheel would turn and not move the front tires. It gradually got worse. Then the steering wheel just turned and nothing happened. When I drove it to the side yard to take loader off and when I put it in my garage I had to use my feet on the steering pitman arms. A little pressure on each side steered it.
I finally tore into it and got the pitman arms off and the steering wheel off. When parked the steering wheel free spun, with the wheel off and a pair of vice grips on the shaft it turns the output shafts. I also found an adjusting screw had backed way off out. Not sure what role that might play in this.
Did I get lucky, I automatically assumed when the steering went that it was the innards of the steering system. It seems everyone who has a loader has problems and the steering parts are hard to find. I even looked at the Jackson Power Steering mod for the utility 350.$$$$
OK, any suggestions on testing it while I have it stripped down. I am a few bolts short having the whole steering system off. Should I tear into the hydraulic pump portion and replace the o-rings. I saw a YouTube video that demonstrated how to do this. I actually would like to look at the innards just to be sure the worm gears are ok but I question my ability, lack of time and possibly lack of parts and I am selling the thing. If I can get a new steering wheel on and have it work then so be it...
