200 engine racing - governor springs ?

Our 200 is running way past "wide open". It is in the "throw a rod" range. If I manually grab the rod to the carburetor and pull it towards the rear, it will come down to an idle for a very few seconds, then run wide open again, all the time with throttle set to "idle"

I suspect governor springs may be broken. Any suggestions ?

There's only one spring in the governor, also a thrust bearing.

Pull the governor and replace both while you are in there. When one is broken the other is usually not far behind. This can be done with the hood on the tractor, and the radiator in place.

I know its a different tractor but when the governor spring broke on my 350 Farmall I had the opposite problem - the engine was at idle no matter what position the throttle was set to.

Not sure on a 200 but on an A,B,C, if you pull the rod FOREWARD it slows it down. Did you have the carb apart & get the throttle plate wrong?

Governors are made so they are at higher speeds when the springs push (or pull) on the weights. A broken spring always makes them go slower, not faster. What is the history of the tractors carb and linkage. Was it apart just prior, or did it just start doing this. (it sounds like the throttle shaft lever is backwards). Jim

Fill in the blanks as to what you have done or not done that has caused this. I.E. a carb rebuild or other such things. I have seen a gov go bad out of the clear blue and cause very odd things but i have also seen linkage problem cause this also

Nothing taken apart recently that I know of (tractor at daughter-son in law's house) I'll ask him when he gets back from 2 weeks National Guard Drill. I can compare it to my 100 should be exact same linkage-throttle-governor action.

Janicholson & Old, good to see you both still on, offering experience & advice.

I've had that happen once (again with the 350 Farmall). I had removed the carb and incorrectly installed it without getting the rod from the governor in the correct position. Immediately on starting the engine "ran away".

A good video on how it all goes to gather on a 230 (similar to a 200?).
