Hi all. New member with possibly getting Farmall H

Hi everyone. I have been doing a lot of research, and I realized my topics have been discussed before most likely, but I need clarification. My girlfriends father has a Farmall H just sitting in the barn with what I believe is a show blower for it. Was told I could get it quite reasonable. I need a tractor for moving and or blowing show at my property in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and am hoping this tractor may work. He told me it had hydraulics on it but he removed and I believed sold them. How hard would it be to put hydraulics back onto this tractor? What would need to be done to run a blower on it? Any and all input is welcome. Thank you.

I would check into a couple of things. First is the snow blower a 3-point hitch mount? That tractor doesn't have it and an aftermarket hitch would have to be procured. Next I would check into the horsepower requirements of the snow blower. You are into about 24hp there most likely and the PTO snowblowers I have looked at can easily be 40hp required. Once you cross those you could go for the liftall belly pump which is transmission-driven or I believe you can go for an upgrade in time to Farmall 300 "live" hydraulics which are engine driven. Each of above will require sourcing used parts.

It looks like that tractor has a 3 point hitch on it but as you said the hydraulics are gone. Belly pump hydraulics aren't hard to find. Search out craigslist I am sure someone is parting out an H around your area.
It looks like the 3 point hitch uses one cylinder on the right side. So if you get the belly pump it wouldn't be difficult to make the 3 point work again.

However....,
An H is too fast in reverse to run a snow blower unless its a low geared H. Look at the serial tag, if the serial ends with X1A, or X1G its a low geared H and might run a blower ok.

If you are expecting to blow feet of snow, this is NOT a good tractor for the job.

Without looking at anything else, the tractor as configured would need a 7' wide snowblower to clear a path for its wheels. With only ~25HP, there is no way it can run a 7' snowblower in very deep snow.

The H is also geared much too fast in both forward and reverse, and lacks a live PTO. Every time you get into too much snow and have to push the clutch to let the snowblower "catch up" the snowblower will stop dead because it is also driven off the main clutch.

You "can" get an M&W clutch for the tractor but first you have to find a complete one, not already installed on a tractor. These are not hard to find already on tractors, but finding them in ready to install condition is rare. Then you would have to install it on this tractor which is major mechanical work involving removing the transmission cover, the left axle, and some gears inside.

The tractor can push much more snow than it can blow. You'd be amazed with a plow on the front how much it can push through.

As one who plowed snow with a old JD B, you would be much farther ahead to rig up a front plow for it. A lot simpler that trying to use a snow thrower. As other have said that thrower needs plenty of HP to do a good job. on this old machine

That H has really been narrowed up so it can run a narrow snow blower, looks like maybe 5 ft wide. Would
help your Horsepower shortage. First pass is always the worst, have to take a full width bite, after that
you can take however wide a bite the tractor can handle.

You don't say what price the H is, not a bad looking tractor but too bad about no hydraulics especially
with the 3-point still there. I'd look for a bigger tractor, like a 400 or 450 gas, over twice the hp of
the H, probably will have power steering, might have fast hitch, will have Torque Amplifier so can reduce
speeds to 2/3rds of those in the H, and will also have live PTO, can slip engine clutch in really deep
snow. Could also look at 300/350 but the 400/450 is much more tractor for same money.
Could look for even newer, like 460 utility, 560,656,584,684, etc.

Thank you everyone for the replies.
Next time I am out their I will seek
out the serial tag to determine exactly
what this is. Can anyone tell me where
I may find it? Also, I can take some
more specific pictures if that may help
distinguish things it may have and
lastly I am not sure if the blower was
for it but I will take a picture of
that as well it sure looked like an IH
blower of some sort.

The H looks nice. A red flag, why would anyone remove hydraulics from a tractor that has a 3 point added on? Maybe hydraulics are still on. Does it run? Does the blower go with the H and is it a 3 pt hook up? Is the PTO shaft with it and does it have an over riding clutch? And firm up the price. Also pictures of right side of tractor.

The H is a fun tractor, but I think very impractical for that purpose, no live hydraulics or PTO.

He is referring to the fact that it doesn't have Live Hydraulics or Live PTO, meaning that when you push the clutch down, the PTO stops turning.

This wouldn't be ideal for a Snow Blower, because you couldn't shove the clutch in and let it clear out if it was getting packed up, you'd have to pop it out of gear or shove the clutch in and then take it out of gear and let the clutch back out to start the PTO again.

Well everyone. I did a bit of
investigative work. On the serial
number I could not find an x1a or
x1g numbers as I don't believe
they were ever there so I can
assume it's not a low gear H. He
took the hydraulics off and new
tires because he had purchased a
skid steer and a friend wanted
them for his tractor. Also, I am
not sure if the blower was used
for this tractor but it's sitting
by it. Maybe someone can shed some
light on the blower for me. I
alsotook pictures of numbers in
the castings if this helps. I do
remember him saying he rebuilt the
engine with superh pistons he is a
machinist by trade. He told me
it's not even worth $500 to him
than he went to he'd probably just
give it to me so I am just looking
into it. Thank you for all the
help.

For $500, the tractor alone is worth that, even if it doesn't run. If that includes the blower too...

If you don't want it for 500, just tell me where it is.

If you have not loaded it yet let me know where it is and I will. He can keep the blower for that price. Besides a blade would work better on that tractor.
