F-20 coughs but wont start.....

Hey Everyone,

I'm taking my 1932 F-20 to Red Power tomorrow, but it is having problems starting. Each time I crank the motor over it fires once or twice (sometimes even 4),
but it wont stay running. I had successfully started it a few days ago to wash it. That time it probably took 15-20 upstrokes on the crank.

Last night I checked the carb to see if there were any obvious problems. Some gas had settled in the the air intake pipe, but other than that, the carb bowl had
fuel in it and there was sufficient flow from the gas tank. I blew out the passages on the bottom half of the carb (I left the top half attached to the
manifold).

After reassembling, the engine continued to pop but would not stay running. Would you suggest setting the idle mixture and main jet screws to factory specs?
Can these starting woes indicate spark plug, magneto, or valve gap problems?

Any help is appreciated! I look forward to displaying it at the show.

did it run well before you posted the problem? does it try to run with choke engaged? I wouldn't think it would be carb adjustment problems.Valve lashes don't suddenly go out of adjustment. Sounds like fuel related .

When it does start it runs really well. I have never had any problems with it running, only starting it. I can pull start it and it will run fine. It has always been temperamental when hand cranking. My other F-20, however, will always start on the 1st pull after choking for 2 pulls.

I can't get the engine to fire with the choke engaged. It only fires with it off.

washing it added to the problem, dry out the moisture in mag.is where to start. then go through the tune up procedure.

Good point rustred, I will start by checking out the mag tonight. I tried to stay away from it when washing, but there was undoubtedly lots of moisture around that area.

To my surprise, cleaning the rotor and points in the mag with emery cloth was the cure! Three cranks with no choke, and on the 4th one the motor fired and took off. I'll have more chances to start it this week at RPRU and see how well it starts.

Thanks for all the replies.

Our JD mod A had a Mag, and the slightest moisture made for hard cranking. WD-40 will dry it out. We started putting a bread bag over the mag when out of use.
Glad you got her running. Enjoy the show.
