Farmall H Clutch

Hey guys! Friend asked me to take a look at his H; said he thinks it needs a new throw out bearing.

So, it looks like he has about 3" free play in the pedal but unfortunately it also looks like he is about out of threads on the adjustment rod. Tractor shifts into gear just fine but you feel a vibration in the pedal just as its released. The clutch shaft chatters left to right as well...I cant remember if that was in gear or just neutral.

Thoughts?

I thought I may try and adjust it if there are enough threads and see what that does. With that much free play and the adjustment rod already almost out of threads wouldn't you think the clutch is on its last leg?

Possibly.

The good news is, you don't have to split an H to replace the clutch components. Just drop the belly pump and you can work on the clutch from below.

Yes, very straight forward. One note of caution, there is a flex plate, a 4-bolt coupling plate, that connects the drive shaft to the transmission, that can be re-installed right, OR WRONG! The correct way is with the maximum space inside it, with it positioned so the drive shaft is inserted forward into the pilot bearing. DO NOT make the mistake, installing the flex plate with the minimum room inside it. The drive shaft will not be inserted into the pilot bearing, it will thrash around and destroy things. Also, save the taper bolts, very pricy at the Case-IHC dealer.

My M had that same vibration in the clutch pedal. Turned out that the culprit was the bolt that holds the transmission input shaft. That bolt was very loose.

When a Clutch disk wears, the freeplay becomes less and less, not more and more. The linkage needs to be shortened, to keep the 1.125 freeplay needed. So the issue can be worn finger pivots in the pressure plate, Loose bolts holding the clutch fork to the cross shaft. wrong or destroyed throwout bearing, possibly a loose throwout pilot tube/mount.
