Farmall 450 Oil

I use Shell Rotella 15-40 and it takes 9 quarts. You should check oil level after you run it to check for any oil leaks. The filler is the cap just ahead of hydraulic pump.

Is it Shell Rotella 15W40 Diesel Engine Oil that you use? Just wondering because it is a gas 450, but the only 15W40 I could find was labeled diesel engine oil.

It is a Diesel oil but I have been using it in all my tractors, trucks, and garden tractors since the mid 60's with no problems.

The multi weight oil 15-40 being promoted is good for both gasoline and diesel engines. We recommend it because it has the protections and additive packages that are appropriate for operating conditions of extreme heat, high load, detergent function, anti foaming, anti corrosion, and variable viscosity. It stays rather fluid in cold weather, and never gets thinner than a 40 wt when at working temperatures. I recommend what the manufacturer recommends for tractors made in the 2000s and newer. But today's diesel oils are dramatically better than the spec in the older tractors manual. Jim

Well i am OLD school and myself and everyone of my customers and friends use 30 weight low ash , not 15-40 this or that 30 weight low ash. On our diesels they get 30 weight series 3 diesel engine oil . for the newer diesels like our Dodges Cummins they get 15-40 , the New Holland skid steers get 10-30 series 3 diesel engine oil .

Low ash. Is the level of Sulfated Ash in the physical properties in an oil product spec sheet the measure of this? If not, where do you find this when looking at different oil products aside from a general statement in the product name or description that simply says LOW ASH ?

I believe that is where you look. Last time I looked, CaseIH Low Ash engine oil had HALF the ash in it as the "recommended" Rotella.

HOWEVER, it seems that CaseIH has switched suppliers from Viscosity to Shell, and will no longer carry the old school "LOW ASH" engine oil.
