Cub leaks oil around oil filter bolt.

I have a Cub that I mow with. When I got the tractor it leaked oil like crazy around the bolt that goes down through the lid on top of the oil filter. It had no washer on it. At the time I put an 0 ring around the bolt and snugged it back down and that was worked for quite a while. Well I guess the 0 ring has given up the ghost cause its leaking again. Should there be a washer on this bolt and if so what size? Will an auto parts store have one? I have been fixing issues with this cub over the last few years while mowing with it. I have about everything running right on it now and would like to get this leak fixed.
Thanks,
Paul

There should be a copper, or maybe brass, washer. You can still get them OEM, but a copper washer that is a slip fit on the bolt and is at least as big around as the head of the bolt will work. Might be able to find something at your local mom & pop hardware.

Mine leaked there also. I found a large fender washer and a matching neoprene washer that the hole was a bit too small for the bolt, assuring it fit tightly. Cleaned the cover real well and sealed the neoprene between the cover and the flat washer under the bolt. Problem solved. Hardware store or big box store usually has a selection of washers. Like others said you can overtighten and warp or crack the cover so go lightly on the wrench.

You also might want to examine the filter cover. Years ago I found mine was warped. I put mine in my lathe and trued it up. You can also get a new cover from this sight.
