400 Farmall: Parts diagram for front of engine (Fan etc)

Farmall 400, gas, TA, live hydraulics, not sure about steering.

Looking for a diagram/manual of the front part of this tractor.

Tractor belongs to a friend at their vacation place, so I cannot easily go and look at it.

Last time I was there, I noticed a noise, almost a knocking noise, that seemed to be coming from the front part of the engine. While the engine is running, I could see the fan hub was moving around some. Is there a fan clutch?? Really only had a good chance to listen when tractor was being put away, and once when the hydraulics was used, the noise stopped.

Tractor has a loader and is used very little and rarely will get up to operating temp, unless someone decides to push snow in the winter.

Thanks

No fan clutch. complex waterpump de=rive and coupling to seperate fan bearings and belt adjustment. A real manual for repair is
needed, not a parts diagram (which is on the caseih.com web site under the shop for parts by model pages. Good luck. Jim

No fan clutch on the 400. If the fan is moving around it means the fan hub bearings need replacing.

However a knock that disappears when the hydraulics are loaded indicates a broken camshaft gear hub. It's a common problem with the Super M/400/450 engines with heavily-used live hydraulics (eg. a loader).

The cam gear is not difficult to replace. It however requires removing the entire front end of the tractor (bolster and radiator assembly) to get to it.

X2 on what Bob M said, although my experience has been a loose cam gear not a broken one, so you might get lucky in that respect. All we had to do was replace the key and tighten the nut back up with some loctite. Of course that's not counting the twisted off frame bolts because they hadn't been touched since the 1960's.

Yeah - I found the camshaft nut had worked loose/dropped off on my Super M. When I opened it up the gear appeared more or less intact. However the hub bore/keyway was partially wallowed out; also several teeth were chipped.

I elected to replace the old gear with new - about $160 as I recall...

Thanks for all the replies.

I looked at the parts diagrams on CaseIH.com, this is what I think you are referring to as the likely culprits (two different problems, noise, and the fan wobble).

Hope pics will load.

Can we get by with the $27 IT manual, or would we need the $75 OEM manual? If this is the problem, not sure who would work on it, but may be any or all of the following: heavy diesel mechanic (young guy), auto mechanic (old guy), and a farmer (old guy). Also since this is at a vacation location, nobody is close and the nearest dealer is 30+ miles and they are probably not open on weekends when we are there.

The I&T manual is of little help for stuff like this.

The OEM Parts Catalog is much better. However decent assembly explosions and parts lists can be downloaded free from the CaseIH Parts Store website.

Note that R/R of the cam gear is relatively straightforward - it can be successfully accomplished by anyone with basic mechanical skills. Most difficult part is removing the front bolster/radiator assembly. It weighs several hundred pounds and is VERY top heavy - a shop crane, etc. is highly recommended.

Also.....you will need a 2-1/2" socket to remove the nut holding the pulley to the front of the crankshaft.
