Any suggestions why my engine only runs when it is choked? When I push in the the choke knob, the engine dies.

about gotta be running lean on gas, might be a vacume leak, is the vent in the gas cap plugged, air cleaner plugged??

If it can run that way for a while, it probably needs the carb cleaned. This involves taking it apart to get at all passages and soaking it in liquid cleaner (submerged) for 24 hrs or so, then cleaning every port and passage with fine wire and compressed air. If it has bad gaskets and worn internal parts a carb kit is needed. There will be a brass disk riveted to the body that gives the id number. Jim

9 out of ten times that symptom means dirt in fuel system. First on list to check is fuel flow, remove the plug on the bottom front of carb and catch the gas with a clean container so you can look for dirt. You should get a good steady flow, check for at least 45 seconds. If the flow is not good then remove the fitting at the carb where fuel line is attached and clean the screen then before reattaching the line turn gas on and check flow, if not then check sediment bowl. If all flow is good going to carb then you have a clogged passage in the upper part of the carb body, remove and clean all passages with a fine wire.

You either have a weak spark of a fuel problem. I would
#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap at the center wire of the distributor and at all the plug wires..
#2 pull the carb drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in under 3 minutes. If the flow is poor work your way back till you find the problem and yes catch the gas to look for water and dirt etc in it.
#3 when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner the oil cup maybe full of mud and water.
#4 pull the air intake tube off and while running hold your hand over the air intake just long enough to start killing the engine then pull it off. Do that a few times and try not to kill the engine. Doing that some time is enough to pull the dirt/rust out and make it run like it should

Could be a leak in the manifold. It would have to be substantial for the engine to die completely. I've had trouble with junk plugging the fuel line on my 300U. Found stuff that looked like hair in the screen at the carb last year. Also had stuff in the tank plugging the outlet. I put an extension in the outlet on mine so stuff settling in the bottom of the tank can't get into the outlet. It made a good short term fix.
