Those tapered bolts did have grooves

Well those tapered bolts in the drive coupler, did have a groove in them, but that's not why they came apart so hard,anyway never would of got them out, without the air hammer, it was two man job!
 
Two man job? Only one man in the shop most of the time and no air hammer in those days. If they have grooves, the square will be worn oblong also.
 
I knew when i am beat, i only got one by myself, the other three were too tough for me,I had the easy job of pulling the trigger on the air gun!

I have always just broke the tapered bolts loose by turning the head.
 
Well that's a pretty shallow head on those bolts, i tried that a little with a 6 pt socket, but went with the pinch/crowbar method.
