I am looking at buying a 400 diesel. Is there a way to tell if the TA is good without it being under a load? Thanks, Mark

I like to drive them at a moderate speed, like in 4th gear half throttle. Push and pull TA lever back and forth several times while moving. It should shift up right now, and when coasting a little when you pull lever back, it should smoothly engage low range without a lurch. Often you can find a TA that will lock up under a load and stay there, but when allowed to coast a little when pulling lever back it will slip, tractor stops. If tractor is coming to a stop with lever back be quick on the clutch as it may engage with a bang.

If it passes this test, then hit the brakes a few times while shifting TA back and forth but the coast test will detect many TA's that will pass the load test.

Normally the low side will be out.Pull the ta back to low side in 4th and step on the brakes hard if it holds your lucky.

I use 5th gear, 1/2 throttle, apply the brakes enough to give the engine a lite load and pull the lever, if the engine speeds up, no TA. Darald

Not trying to worry you but the comments on here are fine to test the TA. I bought a 560D years ago and all the test showed the TA was good. Used it a few times then put it away for the winter. Never worked again. I had to total rebuild it. It worked when I put it away for the winter but never worked again. By the way, I have a 400D. Very nice tractor.

Your experience is why I suggest the coasting test, because the brake test often fails to show up a bad TA.
