LOUD 706 gas.

I've got a 706 gas that runs really loud. Doesn't matter if it has a straight pipe or a muffler. There are no visible holes/leaks/cracks in the manifold. I did find a leak at one corner of the manifold where it bolts to the head on the exhaust. The gasket had blown out. I replaced the gasket with what was on it which was a typical 1/16th" material. I seem to recall something from a post on here about there being two different manifold gaskets for the C-263. Amazingly enough, I found one of the thicker, metal on both sides type in a stash here at home. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

Which muffler are you using the round or oval ? I think the oval muffler doesn't make as much noise.

I have used both round and oval mufflers on my 706's for a quieter sound, and they both are equal in decibels. Round has a smoother sound
to me, but those tractors are always a bit loud no matter what you do.

spmetimes to get a good seal ya need to have the whole intake and exhaust manifold surface ground / milled together to get a good flat seal . Then ya have to get the bolts tight and keep and eye on them . Do not use any old flat washer , they need to be the EXTRA heavy style . Hard to find . when installing tighten the center bolts first and work outwards , then get her HOT and retighten use grade 8 bolts and extra heavy flat washers NO LOCK washers . My preferred wrench for this job is a long Craftsman 9/16th/5/8th's box wrench as it is long enough for added leverage and will get them pesky ones in the middle . As to Ft.Lbs. of torque ???? when my right wrist snaps they are tight enough .

I'm using a round muffler. This thing is louder than my 806 D or the 656 gas. Even at idle, I'd say half again as loud. That is a guess since I haven't used a decibel meter.

There are two types of gasket. Early ones are a piece of steel with gasket material glued to it around the intake ports. The early ones will have line up rings pressed into the head. The later ones are a metal/asbestos sandwich type gasket that does not last long. The two styles are not interchangeable! Ive only been able to find the early style ones from a CIH dealer. Install them like the vet says.

Two types is correct, but the early style was the sandwiched asbestos , steel and same for full length. Same gasket that was used on IH Trucks and 460 , 560 etc. for years. The 706 put that gasket to the test and it failed. So, IH came with the thin, ribbed, embossed on intake when they were making improvements in the engine to overcome short engine life.

The came with coated, grade 8 bolts and hardened steel washers at the same time. You had to split the manifold to use the new gasket due to the different thickness. This also gave you a chance to get the heat stove and riser working properly.

Also, after CaseIH came into power so to speak, the number on that washer was changed and or a different thickness and outside diameter replacement washer using same part number was totally insufficient. Trying to find a good washer got to be a real challenge.

More to installing a manifold than some seem to think if you want it to not leak or crack.

It's strange that they make baffled muffler for the Farmall M-450-660 and other but not 706 or 806. My 450 has a baffled muffler and is quite compared to a Stanley.

(quoted from post at 04:44:18 05/16/17) Does the muffler have a baffle in it? If not, it's no better than a straight pipe.

I beg to disagree. I have an unbaffled muffler on my M. I also have a straight pipe that I use occasionally just for fun. There is a HUGE difference in sound level.

You want a nice muffler for a M get a baffled one. I have a baffled muffler on the 450 and like it. I also just got one of Steiner's new
stainless steel mufflers and haven't had a chance to use it and see what it sounds like ( not baffled but looks different than a Stanley
when you look down through it).
