Value of Farmall 400 with Loader

Hello,

I own an international Farmall 400 tractor with a loader. I am looking to sell it as I will be moving and can't take it with me. I am just wondering approximate value of them so I know what to ask for it. It had been sitting for 5 to 8 years but it ran when we parked it in the barn. The hydrolics on the loader were fixed before we parked it as well. Someone offered me $800 for it plus a 2 bottom plow and cultivator that go with it. This seemed kind of low to me.

Thanks for any info you could give me!

If you can spin the engine with a jump start directly to the starter motoe (not the battery or start
relay, but the copper nut on the side of the starter and ground, it will be worth 15 to 1800. if stuck,
about what you were offered. Jim

You have to understand that people looking at that tractor are only going to be willing to pay based on what they see. If it is non-running, they have to assume that there is something major wrong with the engine, and will only pay wholesale price on the value of the parts they can get off the tractor. A few hundred dollars up to maybe $1000. "Ran when parked" is meaningless. They all ran when they were parked.

If you can get the tractor running and driving, you can increase the value of the tractor by about double. Really it is not that difficult to get one of those old 4-cylinder beasts running again.

Thank you for the responses! I am planning to get a new battery for it to try to get it to start up. I really think that it will start up ok once a new battery and fluids are put in it. I was just trying to get an idea either way I guess of the value. I had read some things online about them and it looked like even non-running 400s were going for at least 1500 just because people like to restore them. Maybe that was outdated information and they aren't as popular any more.

Any tips for getting it ready to run after it has been sitting? I'm not a mechanic but can tinker and try things. I know it needs a battery and I'm sure gas, oil and coolant needs changed out, just not sure if there is anything else that I would be missing.

Thanks for all the tips!

The most important thing is fresh gas. If there's a lot of rust and crud in the tank clean it out good before letting any of it get into the engine. Or if necessary rig up an auxiliary tank to feed it with for the time being.

Probably clean up or replace the points and plugs.
New oil and coolant, as you mentioned, but for initial start up you could probably get by with what's in it.

Good luck, and keep us posted!
