I have a 1967 John Deere 4020 Diesel and a 4230 Diesel. I have an IH 720 4-18 spring trip plow. I noticed a difference in each of their abilities to pull that plow. So I am considering getting a 4-16 plow for the 4020. I am looking at a 710 4-16 plow and an IH 7500 vari width plow. I read just recently that a 7500 vari plow will pull just as hard as a 4-18 plow. But I can't understand why. If the 7500 is adjusted down to 16" setting, then shouldn't it be the same as a 4-16 plow? If it isn't, and it's just as hard to pull, then I can spend half as much and get a 4-16 plow.

you would be much better off with the standard 4-16 with that tractor. Vari width aren't all that great especially if you have tough spots and a small tractor like 4020. You will be much happier with a standard plow.
