Yesterday i bought a 49 farmall H, it has not been converted over to 12 volt, still has the magneto, My question is, does a tractor with magneto use a different spark plug than one thats been converted over to 12 volt?

You need a non-resistor type of spark plug, and non-resistor spark plug wires. The magneto makes the spark. It is fully functional all by itself. NO battery needed. DO NOT ever connect a battery to the magneto. The magneto will be destroyed.

has nothing to do with spark plugs, other than you experimenting on heat ranges for your application of work.

Well honestly I didn't know you needed a "non-resister" plug ; I think they all will work. Better check to see if they wired in a "resistor" ahead of the coil....for a voltage drop. . If they did, then you are ok if the generator is still 6 volt- no alternator. But you also have to change the lights. If no resistor - then you need to put a 6 volt battery back in the system.

Tractor voltage has nothing to do with the battery. Your wires should be copper mite want to check someone just mite have put others in.

The magneto doesn't have battery input , so therefore you don't have to worry about the resistor no matter what voltage battery is on the tractor.

The only wire that should be going to a magneto (besides the plugs wires) is the kill switch that grounds it and stops the tractor from running.

I have seen people use a battery ignition coil on a magneto when it stops functioning properly, but this is not the typical way the magneto should function., it produces it's own power and doesn't need external input.

RE, welcome to the forum. Lots of experienced people on here and plenty of advice. I grew up on a farm but moved away, I bought a farmall 450 last year. It had a 12 volt battery on it, the owner said it had been converted. I learned from the starter shop that he was wrong, it's still a 6 volt system, just has a 12 volt battery. The 12 volt battery makes it turn over faster and once I got it tuned it cranks the 3rd turn over. The guys on here said the 12 volt battery doesn't hurt a thing, as long as I don't over crank the starter. Someone replaced the lights with new fog lights so i guess that part was converted. I made the mistake of putting a 12 volt coil on it; it stopped running smooth, scared me to death. I finally mentioned it on here, someone told me to put the old coil back on... problem solved.

So.... your H can be a 6 volt system and have a 12 volt battery and all be well in the world...that's my experience.

Good luck, post some pics of your H.
