1586 possible ta issue?

Our 1586 which we have never had a issue with has
developed a serius problem this spring. I was out chisel
plowing and all of a sudden when you pick up at the end of
the field turn and drop back in the tractor tires stop. I know
it's not the clutch because I can can really drag the engine
down with the breaks. I have no problems with the steering
or brakes so don't think it's the mcv pump. It does make a
weird noise when it does this. The weird thing is it's random
and if I push the clutch in raise the plow let the clutch out then
go it doesn't do it. It's random? Is the ta having some
catastrophic failure? It has always worked but we have left it
in the forward position 99% of the time. Any ideas where I
should start?

At the very least it sounds like the mechanical sprag/sprague clutch in the TA side of the TA is out. It should not just stop like that. At worst it should feel like the TA shifted and the tractor should continue moving. Only the high side of the TA depends on hydraulic pressure to drive. The low side is mechanical, with a small clutch to prevent freewheeling.

Even though that is not your actual problem, it sounds like you do need a new TA.

Common issue. There is a suction tube and Oring in the intake of the hydraulic pump system. this fails and causes the issue as described. The repair is too easy and (almost) guaranteed. Put 5 gallons of Hytran in it above the fill mark. The extra oil covers the failed suction seal with fluid and thus solves the issue with zero other issues. The oil is far cheaper than a split to fix it. Jim

Are you still in direct drive when this happens or did you pull the TA lever back. Two separate issues here. Like previous poster said, the low side, TA lever back , you need no hydraulic pressure at all. It will pull itself if you took the pump out IF that sprag on low side is good. Also, will it upshift from TA to direct drive ok. It is not uncommon for a sprag to slip and then clutching it, the sprag will take hold again. Does red light come on when this happens and does red light work. Should come on with dead engine, switch on and every time you push the clutch pedal down. But, at any rate, TA is bad.

It definitely does it in high ta I did not try it back I will do that. I'm think I'll wait on trying to add oil until I determine if it does it both ways on the ta

Well i am not really up on the 86's that much as they have that super charger deal unless it has been bypassed and so you are having a loss of pressure on the high side to the high side clutch and the low side sprag is head out for a lunch break . , How is the level of the hyd fluid ?? . If the sprag was good what you would feel is and upshift when pressure came back on . . But somewhere your having a cavitation issue that also is showing a low side T/A failure . Also for what ever reason it somehow even most unlikely be a flow divider issue but unlikely .

So I stand corrected it is only giving us problems in high or ta
lever forward. The red oil light does work but it only comes
on when you push the clutch in or if you switch the ta lever it
flashes in between. I will try the extra oil trick

OK here, if we still have power steering, clutch booster, brakes etc, that pretty much rules out pump and regulated pressure. No light coming on either which would come on if he lost flow to TA.

Ok the ta does not go into high range at all now. Low is working fine. The light does not flash in between shifting the ta lever anymore

Worked up 25 acres last night with. No issue at all with it in low. Now there is no high side of the ta. We are going to try the 5 extra gallons but just the way it's acting I'm guessing that maybe seals in the ta went out or somewhere we lost pressure to run the high side. I'm guessing we probably will be putting a new ta in it. Is there anything else I should do or check before I have to split it?
