Any way to increase power cheaply, D155?

The 385 I use for my hay mowing tractor is not a bad little machine, but for years I have gripes about how gutless it is on some of our hills. I ca t really find any info online about power mods for the D155 motor, was wondering if yall had any advice? Perhaps all it is is turning up the pump a bit?

The D155 is a short stroke engine. If you were this side of the pond I would be looking for a D179 long stroke version as the D179 engine in a 454 tractor was rated here in the UK at 52 horsepower. That is the only way you are going to get more horsepower. MJ

You could turbocharge it and gain a decent amount of power.

He asked about "cheaply." Neither a turbo nor a complete engine swap is a "cheap" solution, let alone an easy solution.

It's not a good idea to go mucking around with the screws inside your injector pump if:

A. you don't know what you're doing.
B. you don't have the proper tools and test equipment (i.e. a dyno) to make sure you did it right.

Just twisting screws can be expensive. It would be cheaper to just get a bigger tractor.

A turbo is very cheap if you know how to do anything yourself and you don't have to pay someone to fab something or buy a kit. I could turbocharge that tractor for less than $500 including the cost of the turbocharger. I guess Cheap is relative though.

If it puts out black smoke when pulling, then turning up fuel will do little/no good.

Poor cold starting could indicate low compression.

Blah sound, or excessive smoking could indicate slow timing.

Post more information.

If the tractor is in good condition, you can probably trade it in on a larger tractor for less cost that modifying your present tractor.

I would put 1/2 gas into the fuel it will raise power cheaply, anything else will cost money.

About all ya can due is do a tune up , like resetting valves check pump timing and advance on the pump make sure the air cleaner is clean and maybe a sight fuel increase , but keep in mind that when you start down the dark path of turning up the pump you create more heat and increase engine ware and shorten engine life . Your Little tractor can only do somuch . It comes down to you need a bigger tractor . Heck we need a bigger tractor also .
