Hi, I'm trying to remove my reverse shift
fork... my book is showing the shafts just
pulls straight upward out of the fork.. can
anyone confirm this? I'm having a heck of a
time pulling it out, so I'm wondering if
there's a pin or something I'm missing??

Yup it does though you will want to remove that lid on the side by the step on the left side. If you don't when the shaft comes out it can let the fork fall in the trans. There is a key in the shaft also . If you use a bar and pry gently it should come out. Might have to tap gently on the top of the fork. The fork is cast iron so it will break if hit or pried to hard.

To get the rev shifting fork out like Cat guy says the top shifter cover must come off and the side cover , you do not have to drain the transmission IF you are at the correct level but you will loose about a gallon of HY tran . and once you lift the top cover the rev. shifting fork will darn near fall out . when putting it back together the rev shifting ROD that the little key if the saft is woren they key will fall out as you go down into the fork . That key must fit tight if it does not then you will have shifting problems same as with the top cover if any of the two holes are sloppy you will have shifting problems . while you have the top cover off also look at the shifter cam and check for ware . Repair or replace anything with ware.

I've taken the reverse shift shaft out of 86 series without removing the side cover. The first time I did it, I didn't figure I had much to lose, I didn't want to remove the dual, slide the inner tire/wheel/hub out, and remove the full lower fuel tank. I made sure the shaft stayed down when I pulled the cover, then wedged the fork in place with a few different dowels from different angles, then pulled the keys out as they just came out of the fork with a magnet. Put a bit of a dimple on the new shaft where the keys go in, tapped the keys into the shaft, and slid the shaft back into the fork. Took me about 20 minutes as compared to hours of moving that other junk out of the way. But, on an 806, by all means, it is so much easier to just pull that side cover off!!

I've had the reverse fork drop off by accident and was able to get it back together using a fairly strong magnet to hold the fork in position while I installed the vertical shaft.
