Farmall H not getting oil to the governor *UPDATE w/pic

We removed the timing cover to see if its gasket had covered the oiling port for the governor. It was unblocked,so we started the engine with the cover off to see if oil was coming out of the port from the block. No oil came from it. There only oil we saw was at the front main crankshaft bearing. So we do have oil pressure there. I'll post the pictures of what we are looking at.

Where does the oil gallery come from that oils the idling gear and the port that goes to the governor. I used wire to try to trace where the ports went in the block. The top governor port went down to the idler gear bearing, but from there I couldn't tell. Maybe the front camshaft bearing? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I apoligize for it being upside down, I wouldn't have my oil problem if the tractor was turned like that...

Sounds like you need to remove the camshaft and check at the front camshaft bearing for proper installation or spun.

I agree. The bearing is a ring shape with two holes. The holes are not opposite of each other. Thus even if one is aligned with the gallery. The other hole may be facing cast iron and the solid part of the shell is blocking the port to the governor passages. Jim

Yep, you guessed it. It had been installed backwards. The ports were barely visible so there was a little bit of oil available for the bearing, which saved it, but not enough to make it to the governor. Flipped the bearing around and we will get a timing cover gasket next week and reassemble. The pictures are before and after. Thank you everyone!

Believe I'd get a new bushing & use Loc-tite when installing it.

Looks like several dings on the edge of the old one, plus minor
scoring on the face.

I'm just curious how you noticed or happened to find that there wasn't any oil getting to the governor? Did it have a failure in there, noisy? Just curious what caught your attention with it.

Ross

That is where the idler gear goes, camshaft gear is still installed. It does look to have a problem though as it may have been installed with out getting the positioning pin in place.

The original poster started a different thread on April 25th stating his throttle was sticking, so he opened up the governor to see if anything was binding in there. He found the inside of the governor was "dry as a bone".

(My apologies if this is bad forum etiquette, to answer a question that was asked of someone else.)

BAD FORUM ETIQUETTE.....????
I didn't know there was such a thing... lol.

Good deal, thanks guys. I just like to know the events leading up to the solution, just so I can take a mental note and store it in my memory bank for "someday". You never know, I've seen some crazy stuff on some of the things people bring me to work on. Although SW EM, I've never been brave enough to run an engine without the front cover, never crossed my mind as a matter of fact, but it looks like it's a good way to get a look in there when running.

I expected the gears to turn faster, but at idle things are moving pretty slow. And it wasn't flinging oil around because there wasn't any getting to the front cover in the first place! Around 5 seconds after start-up there was some coming from the front crankshaft bearing though. It was neat to see everything working.
