04 06 56 etc series hydraulic valve

Working on some hydraulic valves from a 504 according to the eBay seller. The back flow check poppets appear designed to have o-rings on them, except I found the o rings loosely tangled in the spring on both assemblies I'm working on. Part number on my list is 395277r1, with no listing of o ring, and current part number appears to be design without rubber seal according to messick's and bates websites. Have not found listing for o ring under 656, 806, etc. models. The poppet appears to fit liquid-tight without an o ring when I experiment in the parts washer. Should I skip the o ring and polish the mating surfaces with valve grinding compound to assure a seal, or must I replace with a new design poppet? I am sure any o ring installed will soon become lodged in the spring again or under the poppet itself. The bodies I have end in number 267 and have a 7/8 spool diameter.
Thanks

Number 20 on the part diagram. 21, 23, 24 go on 22 not 20

To help searching in the future:
Helpful hint I found is the o ring on 8 is 377805r1
Also a 003 national is close
656 was only tractor I looked up that listed that ring individually on Messicks.

I have had a whole lot of those valves apart but normally just pulled the spool out. It was rare that I had the valve out of the tractor when working on them so very seldom had the reverse check valve out. However, it just seems to me that it was not an o ring but rather a molded rubber seal that was not replaceable. I sure could be wrong though and like everything it may have been changed during production.

The pieces that came out look like o-rings now but could have had more material initially. There's a reason the current replacement part is all metal, it may not be just because ih got cheap. I think our 656's original valve has the all metal one probably from factory.
So I'm working on some early valves I would guess.
Thanks for the input, Pete 23
