International 856

Hey guys looking to see some knowledge here. I'm looking to buy (if for sale) at sompoint in time an 856 international that is missing the PTO unit on the back, bolts right up ton the rearend housing. Now my question is, is this interchangeable with other models because local junkyard has one but for 1300$ a "usable" one. Seems extraordinarly high!

That does sound high, you can pick them up for around 500.00 usually. I think they all fit from a 706 all the way up thru the 86 series.

If this is a factory delete you will also need the shaft to drive it. If it has just been removed it might be hanging in the back. If it has been run with it removed look for it to be lying in the bottom. There is a coupler that goes on the shaft to connect it with the front end to the back end of the forward shaft. This is easily checked with hydraulic pump off on the left side behind step. You can then see if the shaft is coupled correctly when you put it in. Could also use a pipe from the rear over the shaft.
Is the price include the core since you don't have the core? If so might not be to bad. I would opt for a reman unit and check the core price.

Way too much for an unknown quantity.

All States Ag Parts for example has a remanufactured PTO unit for $1350 plus $350 core charge. Basically the same price as the unknown unit, and you're paying $350 to have it rebuilt, which is a steal.

This is a sugar cane high clearance tractor, I was told the hydraulic pump, and the PTO unit was stolen. Motor isn't good either.

Oh wow, definitely not worth a rebuilt PTO unit then, at this point. You can cover that hole with a plate and run without a PTO until you get the rest of the tractor sorted, and look for a better price on a used unit in the meantime, hopefully saving some cash.
