I heard about a tractor for sale that they are claiming is a Super MTA. I have no experience with them. I plan to go look at it but was wondering how do you identify it as one? Thanks, JD

Well look and see if there is a TA lever on the left of the seat, but that's a not for sure either be cause it could of been taken off, or a TA delete, or look for a live PTO unit lever on the right rear corner of the seat, or look for the live pto unit that contains the pto clutches, just to the front of the pto itself. Look at the serial Number, should be between 60,001 and 83,500 or there about! It should end in S if it had the TA w/540live pto, and most did.Or if that all fails bring a tape measure with and see if the gas tank is ahead about 5 more inches, between the gas tank and the Christmas tree post, than a regular Super M.

This is what the TA lever looks like. The picture is for a Farmall 400, but the lever is almost identical:

Please note that the lever does NOT come out of the brake housing!!! If there is a lever coming out of the brake housing, that is an M&W Live Pow'r unit that simulates "live" PTO on an M or Super M. You would not see/need one on a Super MTA.

Here's what the live PTO unit looks like. There's a whole lot more going on in the rear than an M or Super M:

Check hood length, about 39-7/8 inches. From rear of fuel tank lip to front of steering post about 5 inches. Anything less than the two measurements is not a SMTA chassis. Tractor serial number from 60001 up to 83523. Unless a diesel the engine number is stamped in block just above the metal cover on ignition side near where the crankcase ventilation pipe connects to the bulge in metal cover. Unless a diesel engine will have C-264 cast on block above oil filter. Engine serial number 113394 to 136834. If wanting to check for all original you will need a good bit more info.

SMTA and early 400 tractors used a T/A operating handle with handle operating rod guides cast on. Few SMTA tractors were built without a T/A and have no handle. Most found without a handle, someone removed it.
