1586....what oil?

So I am out here waiting on a delivery. Manual is 20 miles away with no one there to look it up. So sorry for what must be a redundant question around here although a Google search was not much help.

Thinking I will get an oil change done on this tractor before I start preparing for planting. I have the filters. Tractor only gets used this time of year. Rarely does anything but move from place to place the rest of the year. It is generally run in temps of 35-80 degrees. Best weight of oil and how much does it hold? Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

Whatever the current incarnation of IH No.1 Diesel Engine Oil, SAE 30, is, is a safe bet. If all you're doing is running it during the warmer months of the year it doesn't need multigrade.

I put 15-40 Mobil Delvac in my 86 series. It seems to hate Rotella for whatever reason. Much more blowby, uses oil, leaks oil - just generally a headache. When I changed back to Delvac it was back to normal within five hours of use.

Different but the same: I have an Onan 19 kw power plant that I use when the lights go out. It is an Onan built diesel engine. I called them about something and happened to ask the tech about oil. It recommended 30 weight oil in it under moderate temps. He told me there isn't any reason why 15-40 wouldn't be a good oil to use. He said it was what they were recommending now for their engines. I was already running it. It just made me feel better to hear it.

The only 30 weight oil used here is in the mower engines. I've even started using Delvac in my old VW's. I always ran 30 weight before, but it just seems kind of archaic now.

If you are already using the 15-40 in other things I would use that and save the inventory of more oils. Less confusion. If not then the 30 would be fine for no more than you use it. We have a similar use thing with 3-4 tractors that just get used for tillage in spring and fall then set rest of year.
