Farmall H governor not getting oil

Hi everyone,

My 17 year old brother was given the task of resurrecting a Farmall H that had been "poorly restored" by a previous FFA club. It had been crudely painted and given new tires, but we do not know what mechanical has been done to it. We gave it an oil change, new filter, and new coolant. The engine has good oil pressure according to the gauge.

Recently we were having problems with the throttle sticking and we took the side cover off the governor to diagnose the issue. The governor mechanism was bone dry, not getting any oil.

What steps would you take to troubleshoot this problem and find the source of the oil blockage?

Thanks in advance!

The governor gets oiled through a small hole (3/32") that is located on the front part of the casting. About 3/4"
above the main bearing and toward the back of the housing. Most likely that hole is plugged. You may be able to open it
up with a stiff piece of wire like is used in a small engine throttle cable, and not have to take any thing apart. Start
up the engine and oil should be coming through in a matter of seconds.
If this doesn't work you'll probably have to take gov off and check further. Could possibly be plugged with silicone if
that was used. Good luck. Bob

Huh?

That doesn't sound right. Both of my H's and my M have a metal tube running from the top of the cylinder head to the top of the governor. The tube is about 1/4" OD and probably 3/16" ID.

That's a vent tube, goes in front of head, through valve cover, out back of head to air cleaner. Pvc system.

Thanks Bob.

Yes we even had the cover off while it was running and no oil was coming from anywhere.

If we find that the oiling hole at the front of the governor is not blocked, and no oil is coming from it, what would be the next logical step?

We considered that if the engine had its camshaft bearing replaced, maybe the oiling holes didn't line up. Assuming there are no blockages in the governor oiling port, would this be the next place to look?

But still there's a lot of oil coming threw that tube, my fitting was loose in front of the head,on a tractor with a wide front, and the stay rod socket support cradle caught it all.

No oil in the vent tube is from pressurized oil gallery. The governor splashes a lot of oil around and it can be picked up in that tube with the sight vacuum to tube from air cleaner inlet to that pipe through the head.

If they had the front cover off that engine, there are several possibilities of what is wrong. There is a slot in behind that cover and behind the next plate. Silicone or who knows.

The small hole is the oil supply port

I had a similar problem on my H after replacing the block. Turns out the gasket used on the timing cover was blocking a hole that fed oil to the governor. The hole was never punched in the gasket when it was made. I don't know if there is a way to find that out without tearing the tractor apart first.

Thanks for the helpful responses everyone. The pictures of the governor were especially helpful Redturbo. My brother and I will check for blockage in that small oil gallery first.
