T/A re-assembly

I am putting a new ramp and rollers in my T/A. Any tricks for re-assembling the T/A unit after replacing the ramp and roller assembly? It's from a SMTA.

Fully explained in any I-T manual. I have heard that if you are careless in reassembly, they will whine while on the low side. (Red Power, around the turn of the century.)

Well as long as the quill is good install it with a coating of Hy Tran and when sliding it in becarefull not to damage the big seal as i have seen way to many self installed T/A's that leak hy tran into the dry T/A clutch section because of that seal getting rolled over due to the sharp lip on the assembly and going into that seal backwards and not having the installation tool to prevent this from happing.

On my brothers 400, there was 1 roller missing in the very first bearing in in the rear section, of the tractor, and it wasn't in the rear end housing or the grease. It was quite, no way knowing it was missing, so look for that, and the new bearing, has much heavier rollers in it.

I have a sleeve to use when installing so the seal doesn't get damaged. My concern was sliding the two pieces together and not having the rollers fall out.

I have had success using a piese of nylin garden cord/string to tie them in place with a single knot (first knot in shoe tying) that can be easily pulled out when they enter far enough. Jim

I have had pretty good luck using pieces of 14 ga solid strand copper wire bent into little L's to hold the rollers in place and when the front half is almost completely seated I slide the copper L's out while sliding it the rest of the way together.

Kind of late on this but I have my own way of assembling those TA units. With the planetary gears all installed and TIMED OF COURSE, I support unit with open end up. Install that thin ball bearing. It has a off set wider outer race that has to go facing up toward you or it will rub into the planetary carrier. It is off set so washer that goes on next will not rub bearing retainers.

Now, I install the ramp, on carrier and insert the rollers. Then assemble output shaft into housing with bearing , snap ring, spacer and brass washer. I then put output housing into a vise, carefully lower the carrier with ramp down onto output shaft, observing where the holes align for the four bolts holding ramp to output housing.

Then by rotating carrier , align bolt holes with notch in carrier and install bolts. I don't know if a book tells you do it like that or not, but that is the system I used for all the years I repaired TA's. Back in those days, we never saw a rebuilt unit, all were repaired with new parts as needed.
