replacement clutches

I work part time(retirement pastime) at a local tractor repair/implement dealer/feed store. They used to be an IH dealer back in the day, family owned. So mostly what we work on is IH,usually a 474-3220,595-4210,and so on.When ever we replace a clutch,we have to adjust the fingers on the pressure plate. These are aftermarket reman clutches, from several different re builders.Do any of you run into this,or know of a re builder that sets the fingers correctly before hand? There is/was a tool to set the finger height, but we don't have it and can't find one.I worked on big trucks for 40 yrs and never had to set the fingers.I would not mind this so bad if we had the tool, but right now I am making an educated guess when I set them, and making notes. We are having flywheels turned including the step to the correct height. So any ideas, better re builders? Thanks,Mark.

I have run into that on rebuilt clutch's on the Farmall tractors. What it come out to is that the rebuilders are resurfacing the clutch pressure plate too far. When ever they resurface a pressure plate they should provide a clutch disc wit additional thickness to compensate for the material removal.

What I have done, other than send the clutch back and get a different one is to have the step cut down an additional amount to get the proper finger height. What actually goes right along with this of course is that you don't get the proper spring tension applied to the disc and also most clutch pressure plate only move so far before they bottom out and won't pull. So, what I am saying is you get a whole lot shorter clutch life.

I had one from Hy Capacity where I bolted it up to flywheel that had correct step height and there was literally zero tension. Fingers were sitting just like a worn out clutch looks. Their explanation was that they must have resurfaced it beyond acceptable specification. I say, it should be same as new, thicker disc or different step specification to match.

We never sold rebuilt clutch's for the first 33 years I worked at IH dealer. I rebuilt them all with new parts. Then new owners, can't do that. Takes too much time. Costs too much. And so it goes.
