Cub Cadet charging system

Okay, I know this isn't the exact right forum, but I'm too lazy to look the other one up:) My 1992 Cub Cadet has the Kohler M18 motor, the tractor itself is a model 1862. Long story short, a lot has been lost off of it in terms of original wiring harness. I've got the armature on the motor to where it's making voltage, which passes through the little rectifier on the cowl. My question is, can I simply run a wire from the center (output) terminal on the rectifier to the positive terminal on the battery, to keep the battery charged? Thanks, Hugh.

I do see where it shows a "voltage sensor" in the circuit of the red/white wire coming from the "alternator". Mightn't that perform the same function as a Zenner diode in that application? Anyway, thanks for the help:)
