Bought a mower today (Bushhog
brand) got it mostly put on.
Except the pulley. One on tractor
is too small so guy gave us an 8
in one to put on. Only issue ,I
think old one is welded on ?!?!
Can anyone tell from these
pictures? Also when we raise big
lever the mower goes down. Lower
it and mover goes up ?!? Do we
have something wrong? Worst part
in trying to remove pulley the PTO
shaft came out?!!! Quick search
here shows this is common? So it
just more or less sits in there!??
Thanks for any and all help.

Did you loosen the 2 lock bolts on the PTO pulley?? Then once you have done that on many there is a pair of bolt holes where you then put a bolt in and tighten them and that forces the clamp to let go of the PTO shaft. Also be careful with changing pulleys because if you go to big that can increase the speed of the blade to the point it is not safe to run the mower

Can you take another picture like the first one? It's a little hard to see, but it does look like the pulley is welded to the PTO shaft. IF that's the case, you should probably start looking for a replacement shaft. I guess you could take a die grinder and grind the weld off.

We stopped at a local repair shop and he pressed the pulley off. It was welded on because there were no splines on the pulley (I guess it was "Farmerized". With a little careful grinding hopefully we will have it up and going.

That's a sickle bar mower pulley, and they frequently end up getting the splines beat out of them due to the vibration from the mower, and the difficulty in keeping the pulley clamped tight on the shaft.

I believe new PTO shafts are still available if you end up needing one, plus with 250000+ Cubs made I'm sure there are lots of good used ones too.
