Removing 86 series muffler

Has anyone ever removed the under hood muffler on an 86 series an run it just straight pipe? I was reading that some guys had done it and it wasn't any louder and really helped the A/C keep up due to less firewall heat. I can't imagine that it isn't any louder. Mine is an 886 with no add on turbo. It doesn't ever pull super hard - it's just the baling tractor all summer. When it gets close to 100 that firewall is hot as a firecracker.

I don't know how the 886 is compared to a 1486, but it does help. On a 10 or 1486, you have to have the pipe called a muffler eliminator that moves the exhaust pipe to the correct place. On our 1486 with a forward facing chrome pipe it's not any louder in the cab than with a muffler, it's loud either way sitting on top of that engine screaming away lol. It does cut down on underhood heat tremendously though, which we really were looking at, since we wanted to keep her cool being turned up a bit. Our 1086 has the underhood muffler still, which will stay that way until it finally fails, at which time it will be converted. Oh yeah, MUCH easier to work on anything underneath the hood without that stupid muffler in the way!

Without a turbo your 886 will be loud with a straight pipe. You could always put an over-the-hood muffler on it. Can a muffler from a 966 be adapted to fit?

Call Dave Thormur at Thormur Mfg, tell him what you have and what you want and he will make what you need. He makes the Muffler E!iminators and other special requests. Tell him whether you have the D-360 or D-358 engine.
