Need help replace BN distributor

I need a little help. I don't have a manual for my BN(I know I should get one). I need to replace the distributor. Can you tell me the procedure so I get it aligned correctly? Do I remove it in whatever position it's in and try to aim the rotor in the same position on the new horizontal distributor? Or do I need bring No 1 cyl to TDC?

I need to replace it because I've been limping it along by cleaning corrosion on the cap and rotor with a Dremel with a scotchbrite wheel. That worked for a few months, but now she won't fire. The dist cap and rotor do not look like the original, so I can't just buy those parts. It uses short spring clips that clip to the base of the cap. Points could also probably use replacing. I tried running an ignition file over the points to no effect. So i need to get it running quickly. It's a John's forklift and I use it regularly.

It is always good to get #1 at TDC before you pull the distributor. Then mark where the rotor points on the old one and do your best to get it in the same place on the new one. Once installed the new one will need to be timed since you will not be able to put the new one in at the exact some place as the old one

I pull dists all the time just make sure the rotor is pointed the same when putting back in no problem even do mags the same way.

Ok, I just gaped the points on the new distributor to .020 and installed the distributor. It fired right up and i adjusted the timing by ear and it's right about where the old one was by chance. What is the proper way to time the 4cyl gas engine on my BN? Is there a timing mark somewhere? What should the timing be? There is a little plate below the distributor, but not sure what that is? I don't see another inspection cover for timing marks?
